[collectd] how to save data into text file?

hello All,

I would like to collect data from device that logs a gate activity 
through a serial port.

I have a serial to ethernet converter setup as a client.
When it receives data from the serial port, it can call a host that is 
listening on a defined port.

Can I use collectd to save data in a text file?

collectd-unisock looks like the way to go, but I'm no programmer and I 
am a bit lost reading the man page...
