Hi everybody,
the next minor version, collectd 4.3, is nearing it's completion. All
features we wanted to be in in 4.3 have been implemented and are
available in the Git repository. In order to get some more testers I
packed a beta tarball and put it on the download page. If you find
anything unexpected please let us know.
Besides the UUID and libvirt plugins contributed by Richard Jones, the
new features revolve around two new concepts:
* notifications: Notifications are text messages that can be dispatched
by the daemon, in particular they can be sent and received using the
network plugin. The messages have a severity and a time and may be
associated with a performance value, e. g. the cpu-0/cpu-idle value.
* thresholds: Thresholds are upper and lower limits on a given value. If
such a threshold is defined, and the value reported to collectd is
outside the configured range, a notification is created.
Of course, these changes are meant to be the infrastructure for moving
collectd towards monitoring, i. e. acting upon the values received.
Right now this is not nearly up to full scale monitoring solutions such
as Nagios - there is no such thing as a `downtime' yet, for example. But
it's now possible to expand in this direction.
All relevant plugins have been updated to make use of these new
possibilities: The logfile plugins can log notifications, the unixsock
plugin can receive and dispatch them, the exec plugin can execute
programs to handle the notifications and, last but not least, executed
programs can create notifications, too.
The full changelog can be found in the tarball, the Git repository, or
under this URL:
