[collectd] plugins on sles9 without .so ending ?

that's weird.. Could you please do
 $ make clean
 $ make | tee make.log
and open a bugreport at <http://collectd.org/mantis/>? Please attach the
files `config.log' and `make.log' that should now be in the top source
directory? Also the output of
 $ file /path/to/file/without_so
would be interesting.

I have no idea what kind of files those are, so I'd say simply renaming
them will have a very undefined outcome ;)
