This is a problem that has been fixed in 4.10.3. In older versions
there's no other way around this except for actually registering a write
callback. For example, you could come up with a dummy plugin which will
register a no-op write callback. This can be done in C, Perl, Python,
etc. (whatever 4.10 supported at that time).
