[collectd] zeros in output

I have been writing a new plugin and used an existing plugin as a base.  I
have followed documented steps to add it to the makefiles, configure, etc.

My problem comes when I run the plugin.  If I register it using the original
plugin name it works fine.  If I register it using a new name (any new name,
it seems) it writes only zeros into the output csv and RRD files.  I have
replicated the issue on OSX and Centos Linux, using different names, etc.
What am I doing wrong?
