[collectd] collection from dmz hosts

I would like to use collectd for monitoring some dmz hosts, which
aren't allowed to make
connections back into the network where the main collectd server
is.Only a few ports are open.

I only need to view the monitoring data from time to time, not
continuously, via collection3.cgi.
My thought was to run a collectd server on each host and every few
hours make a copy of the rrd files, for viewing.

My question to the list is: are there better, or standard ways to do this?
