[collectd] Question about plugins

I am working no creating a plugin for a Watt Meter.  I have code from
this site http://fortknox.csc.ncsu.edu/tools/metertools/ that allows me
to read from the watt meter over the serial port.

My question is, should I just rip out the connection code needed
(obviously attributing it) or should I just use the libraries provided
from that code?
