Hi list,

I am in the process of migrating the collectd wiki to Github. The new
location of the wiki is: https://github.com/collectd/collectd/wiki

collectd currently uses a Mediawiki instance for much of the
documentation. While this has served us well so far, it has some
downsides:

* We had to disable self-service sign-ups due to massive problems with
spam. This prevents us from actually using the wiki as it was
intended.
* The wiki is running singly homed on one server, which is not very
reliable. In case of a hardware failure, the wiki would be unavailable
for days.

Migrating to Github solves these problems.

Current status:
all "normal" wiki topics (i.e. topics in the "Main" namespace) have
been imported into the Github wiki. Wiki topics in other namespaces
("User", "Category", …) will not be migrated. A random 10% sample of
wiki topics have been converted to Markdown, the remainder are still
in Mediawiki format. Images have not yet been imported (except icons
on the "Home" page).

Next steps:
* Review topics that have been converted to Markdown and identify
conversion issues
* Import images. I don't think embedding images works with the
Mediawiki format, hence the partial conversion to test
* Convert all topics to Markdown
* Disable the old wiki and install redirects to the new location
* Migrate the home page to Github Pages. You can preview the new site
at: https://collectd.github.io/ (WIP)
* Migrate the mailing list to somewhere else (not sure where to yet)

How you can help:
Please file bugs if you encounter broken links that work in the old
wiki, formatting issues that affect multiple topics, or other systemic
problems in the new wiki.
If you have an interest in web development or experience with Github
Pages/Jekyll think that migrating collectd.org to Github Pages sounds
like a fun project, I'd be happy to hand over the project, either in
part or fully. Just ping me :)

Best regards
