Thanks for the patch, I'll include it in the next feature release, i. e.
4.3.0. Unfortunately I started making some bigger changes and now have
no time to finish them, so I doubt that I'll be able to finish the new
release this year :(

Oh, no problem: You patch doesn't change existing functionality, is easy
to read and understand and (with a little #ifdef around it) portable, so
there is no reason to reject it ;) If you have such a small and simple
proxy I'd be happy to include it in contrib/.
